    "Shooting The Hippopotamus"
    Captain William Cornwallis Harris
We offer a hand colored book plate lithograph illustrated by Captain William Cornwallis Harris (English,1807-1841) taken from the fifth edition, 1852, of his famous volume which was considered to be the first on big game hunting in Africa:
The Wild Sports Of Southern Africa; Being The Narrative Of A Hunting Expedition From The Cape OF Good Hope, Through The Territories Of The Chief Moselekatse, To The Tropic Of Capricorn. By Captain William Cornwallis Harris, Of The H.E.I. Company's Engineers On The Bombay Establishment.
The book plate is titled "Shooting The Hippopotamus". The paper is on heavier stock than the original printed pages of the book and retains the protective cover page. The lithograph measures 9 1/2" by 6 1/2". As seen in the photographs, there are areas of faint discoloration to the paper but the image is vivid.
Provenance of the Honorable Will Garwood (1931-2011) United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
