    Description

For sale is a vintage 1940-ish baseball glove endorsed by Fred "Dixie" Walker, a leading player of the time.  Walker played for the Yankees and other teams in the 1930's and for the Brooklyn Dodgers during WWII and most of the 1940's.**  In addition to Walker's name, other features are engraved into the leather such as "No Rip Thumb" and "Pat. Applied for" underneath that, and inside the top of the webbing.  See pictures.  Glove has considerable wear but is in good condition for its age with nothing broken or missing.  Please see all pictures.  Leather is supple in most places due to frequent treatments with Neats Foot Oil over the decades.
Patent number 2,231,204, is still weakly readable on the back of the thumb.  It is likely that at least part of the glove was manufactured before the date the patent was
    issued
(i.e. before Feb 11, 1941, hence the "Pat Applied For" on the front)  but after the date the patent was
    applied for
, which was Jan 7, 1939 (see last picture for the patent info).  Then, after patent issuance, the glove was stamped with the patent number and sold soon after.  A 1940-ish making is also consistent with my father (b. 1930) receiving this glove "as a young boy" in his words.
** See The Society for American Baseball Research at www.sabr.org for a nice writeup on Walker's career achievements and his involvement in a few tempestuous situations on/off the field.
