Provenance:  A look back: This is a great sounding horn. I got it with original lacquer and pads which had a lot of play on them. The springs were too heavy and adjusting them alone meant slowing down the action. it needs finer springs with wider hammered ends, sprung - s when the pads got impossible to play on and my hands started to hurt from the stiff action I decided to play a  Cigar Cutter. Needed an overhaul and the springs were a bit too tough. I decided to overhaul it and add it to my personal altos. Never had the time.  I was busy doing repairs for music stores and operating a guitar and bass shop.
I sent this as most of my plating and finishing to Amil Provencher of Newark, who simply stripped the lacquer as per my instructions, and  basically had his men hand rag and buff, after I removed dents.  There weren't many and I did not remove the bow or bell.  Minimal work done. There is no  buff wear to posts and key rods as you would get with a machine, and almost no metal removed. The keys are in line and re-pad should be a cinch.  The pearls have no wear. There is no play in any keys but care much be taken to the G# key and guides, as is with this model. Once set up it reliable easy and and fast.. The original rollers and rod screws are in the film canister with the leaf spring screws
This horn has near impeccable intonation, and a HUGH sound with a lot of projection. It really pops in the altissimo.
Great tonal center with a lot of resonance. Smooth and silky pianissimo. A very under-rated horn and much in demand.
Fast table. Has an articulated C#-G#. It can be extended by soldering a bar to B-G# and a longer bar for a  Bb-Ab
All solid Nickel Silver keys and Key Cups.
Front F key is a blessing and increases the fingering variations in altissimo which this horn responds well, even with the more difficult notes noted as in many altos.
All tone holes are rounded toward the top of the chimneys and are indeed perfect. These rounded tone holes, I believe lend to the rich tone and this horn's ability to speak.. However the action on my Selmer Cigar Cutter was much lighter, though it did not have the guts this Martin has.
Great tonal center with plenty of harmonic resonance. Centered yet broad.
Even throughout the scale.
Needs Springs selected for feel. Blued steel only.
Needs new resonator pads. Use correct thickness. This horn had a big sound with rivet pads. With resonators it will only be even better.
New Blue steel leaf springs also. What is left is a bit rusted.
Screws for leaf springs are there.
Rollers and roller screws are there.
Needs a C/C# rod screw. Standard thread. EZ to make. Also RH middle F# key screw is missing.
