TIRE SIZE COMBINATIONS
Option 1:
4.5/10.0-5 Front & 4.5/10.5-6 Rear (
Recommended for 100cc Piston Port Classes
)
The balance with this setup favors the front of the kart. The rear will be more neutral or “free”. Steering will be responsive and the front tires will give the driver more feedback. Depending on chassis setup, the 4.5/10.0-5 may require more steering effort by the driver. This can be reduced by making a caster adjustment. The 4.5/10.0-5 will measure approximately 32” in circumference on a 5x5 wheel at 12 psi cold. The 4.5/10.5-6 will measure approximately 33” on a 6x5 wheel at 12 psi cold.
Option 2:
4.5/10.5-6 Front & 5.5/11.0-6 Rear (
Recommended for Controlled, Stock Appearing, & Open Classes
)
The 6” bead size tires all around will help create a more neutral balance for the kart. This setup will “free up” the chassis, allowing the kart to be smooth and controlled while negotiating turns. The 4.5/10.5-6 will measure approximately 33” on a 6x5 wheel at 12 psi cold. The 5.5/11.0-6 will measure approximately 34 1/8” on a 6x5.5 wheel at 14 psi cold.
Option 3:
4.5/10.0-5 Front & 6.0/11.0-5 Rear (
Recommended for Controlled, Stock Appearing, & Open Classes
)
The kart will have a neutral balance with 5” bead tires all around, but the overall amount of grip will increase substantially when compared to 6” bead tires all around. This setup is ideal for karts that lack grip with comparable sized 6” bead tires. The 4.5/10.0-5 will measure approximately 32” on a 5x5 wheel at 12 psi cold. The 6.0/11.0-5 will measure approximately 34” on a 5x7 wheel at 12 psi cold.
Option 4:
4.5/10.5-6 Front & Rear (
Recommended for 4-Cycle Sprint Classes
)
Like option 2, the 6” bead size tires all around will help create a more neutral balance for the kart. This setup will “free up” the chassis, allowing the kart to be smooth and controlled while negotiating turns. The only difference between Option 2 and this option is the rear tire size. The 4.5/10.5-6 has a ½ inch less tread width and is also 1” shorter in circumference compared to the 5.5/11.0-6. This setup is more ideal for the lower horsepower 4-cycle sprint classes because it has less rotating weight and provides a sufficient level of grip without compromising corner speed. The 4.5/10.5-6 will measure approximately 33” on a 6x5 wheel at 12 psi cold.
Option 5:
5.0/10.5-6 Front & 8.0/11.0-6 Rear
These tires have been designed to provide more overall grip for karting’s most demanding class – Super Karts. The front tires maximize grip on slow speed corners and allow the driver to “fine tune” rear end grip for optimum performance through high speed corners. The 5.0/10.5-6 will measure approximately 33 1/8” on a 6x6 wheel at 12 psi cold. The 8.0/11.0-6 is approximately 35 1/2” on a 6x8.5 wheel at 12 psi cold. A combination of these tires can be used on B-Stock and Formula 125 classes. PLEASE NOTE: Hoosier recommends using a 6x6 wheel with the 5.0/10.5-6 for best results.
SET-UP INFORMATION
:
For the 4.5/10.5-6 and 5.5/11.0-6 Tire Sizes:
The recommended starting pressure for these tires on cooler tracks that have low to medium grip is between 14-16 psi cold. The recommended starting pressure on warmer, high grip tracks is between 12-13 psi cold.
If more overall grip is desired, increasing cold pressures in .5-1 psi increments is recommended. The highest recommended race pressure is 20 psi cold.
If less overall grip is desired, lowering cold pressures in .5-1 psi increments is recommended. The lowest recommended air pressure is 12 psi.
For the 4.5/10.0-5, 6.0/11.0-5 and 5.0/10.5-6 Tire Sizes:
The recommended starting pressure for these tires is between 12-14 psi cold. The R60A is a medium grip compound that is designed for cooler tracks with low to medium grip levels. The R60 is a harder compound designed for high heat tracks that have a lot of grip or rubber build up throughout the circuit.
DIRECTION OF ROTATION/ MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS:
Every Hoosier race tire has a four character serial code embossed into ONE sidewall of the tire (example: J7B9). The left side tires should be mounted with the serial side code facing toward the outside of the kart. The right side tires should be mounted with the serial code facing toward the centerline of the kart. Once the tire is on the rim, we recommend placing the tire inside a mounting ring and adjusting the ring to fit snug around the tire. We highly advise using the mounting ring as we believe not using it can over stretch the carcass leading to inconsistent sizing. Once the tire has seated onto the rim, it is important the tire be initially stretched to about 10 psi over cold starting pressure to get the tire to its proper "profile". The tire should be set at this pressure for a few minutes and then dropped to the desired race pressure. Just be consistent in this procedure to get repeatable results.
