Description
OFFERED HERE IS A ANTIQUE AND VINTAGE BASEBALL STATUE. I PERSONALLY IN 30 YEARS HAVE ONLY SEEN TWO OF THESE OFFERED ONE IN 2006 BY HERITAGE AUCTIONS AND THIS ONE. THIS IS A"LARGE VERSION
" OF A VINTAGE PAPIER MACHE BASEBALL CANDY CONTAINER. I HAVE COLLECTED ALL OF THESE FOR YEARS AND MOST ARE 1.5 TO 6 INCHES TALL AND STAND ON A CANDY BOX.
THIS GUY STANDS 11 NCHES TALL BY 4 INCHES WIDE!
LIKE MOST ALL OF THEM THIS ONE WAS MADE IN GERMANY AS MARKED ON THE BOTTOM OF HIS SHOES.
AS MENTIONED, THIS VERSION STANDS 11 INCHES TALL AND IS MORE LIKE A STATUE THAN A CANDY CONTAINER. LIKE THE OTHER MORE RARE CANDY CONTAINERS I HAVE OWNED, THIS ONE COMES APART AT THE BODY (NECK) AND YOU PUT CANDY IN THE OPENING. BECAUSE THIS VINTAGE BASEBALL PLAYER IS DRESSED IN A PINSTRIPE UNIFORM HE MUST BE AFTER 1907 OR LIKELY AFTER 1912 BECAUSE THAT IS WHEN THE YANKEES STARTED USING THE PINSTRIPES.
HE HAS YANKEES COLORS.
THIS GUY IS WEARING A "
FIRST BASEMAN MITT
" WHICH IS KIND OF UNUSUAL FOR THESE CONTAINERS AS MOST WERE BATTERS OR PITCHERS. HOWEVER THIS ALL MAKES SENSE WHEN YOU LOOK ON THE BACK OF IT AND SEE A HAND SEWN IN STRING ORIGINAL TO THE DOLL THAT READS IN PENCIL "
LOU GEHRIG #708"
. AFTER OBTAINING THIS AND LOOKING AT TAG I HAVE LOOKED EVRYWHERE TO SEE IF THERE WAS A AD REFERENCE TO SUCH A DOLL. NONE FOUND BY ME ANYWAY. I ALSO LOOKED AT ONE BEING MADE AFTER LOU GEHRIG BUT AGAIN NO LUCK IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS MODEL NUMBER #708 AND MANUFACTURER PLEASE LET ME KNOW. DO BELIVE THE STRING IS ALL ORIGINAL AND THE NUMBER #708 I BELIEVE IS THE MANUFACTURERS NUMBER FOR THE DOLL. BUT THAT IS MY GUESS NOT VERIFIED FACT.
I DO KNOW THIS SAME DOLL/CONTAINER WAS OFFERED IN 2006 BY HERITAGE IS THE EXACT SAME DOLL BUT THEY HAD NO DOLL TAG AND THEY GUESSED THE AGE AT 1910-1915 WHICH MAKES SENSE. MOST PAPIER MACHE CANDY CONTAINERS WERE MADE AROUND THIS PERIOD.
THE SOCKS ARE MADE OF WOOL AND LOOK LIKE BASEBALL SOCKS, THE PINSTRIPE UNIFORM IS GORGEOUS AND COMPLETE, HAS A LEATHER BELT AND BUCKLE, FIRST BASEMAN MITT ON ONE HAND AND BALL IN OTHER.
IF YOU LOOK CLOSE SEE THE FINE DETAIL TO EACH FINGER HAVING FINGERNAILS AND THE DETAIL TO THE FACE!
THE ONLY SPOTS ON THE ENTIRE STATUE THAT ARE NOT PERFECT ARE ON HIS FEET! IT LOOKS LIKE HE TOOK SOME SCARS TO BOTH SHOES FROM JUST WEAR. OTHER THAN HIS SHOES HE WOULD RATE A
NEAR MINT STATUE.
REMEMBER THIS GUY STANDS 11 INCHES TALL AND 4 INCHES WIDE DOUBLE THE SIZE OF A SMALLER SIMILAR STYLE CANDY CONTAINER OF WHICH I SOLD FOR WELL OVER 00 DOLLARS. THIS ONE IS UNUSUALLY LARGER.
THESE VERY RARE AND LARGER VERSIONS NORMALLY GO IN THE 00 TO 00 RANGE AND THAT IS ASSUMING THIS WAS NOT MADE AFTER LOU GEHRIG AND IS JUST A UNKNOWN BASEBALL PLAYER FROM LONG AGO.
LOOK AT THE FACE AND TELL ME THAT IS NOT LOU GEHRIG! (LAST PICTURE)
